Consultation on Personal Possession of Illegal Drugs

20th June 2018 / Comments (1)

The Department of Health has established a working group under the national drug strategy “Reducing Harm, Supporting Recovery” to examine alternative approaches for the possession of illegal drugs for personal use.

The working group are consulting the public (YES YOU!) on the effectiveness of the current laws and what alternatives should be considered, including decriminalisation for personal use.

We urge our members to take this opportunity to change the laws on possession of mushrooms and other drugs in Ireland.

Mushrooms containing the psychoactive compound psilocybin are found naturally occurring all over Ireland. Yet, possession of these native substances has been prohibited since 2006. Thousands of people in Ireland use these mushrooms regularly for a range of mental health benefits. Many international studies support these findings. It is absurd to criminalise something that has so many benefits to psychological health. I urge a change in drug laws to allow personal use of these natural medicines.

I just found this site (having just moved here from the US) and am too late to sign the petition, unfortunately. But I’m an advocate for the decriminalization of plants and plant medicines. I’ve worked with various (shrooms, san pedro, ayahuasca..) and would love to network some time. Maybe get a group together to go foraging?

Anyway…love the site. Great work. If you want/need any help…I am here.
